My work frequently questions the colonial relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States, exploring histories of resistance on the island and in the diaspora.
Miguel Luciano’s art explores themes of history, popular culture, and social justice through sculpture, painting, and socially engaged public art projects. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at The Mercosul Biennial, Brazil; El Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de la Habana, Cuba; La Grande Halle de la Villette, Paris; El Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; The San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial, Puerto Rico; and The Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, and the Socially Engaged Art Fellowship from A Blade of Grass. His work is featured in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; The Brooklyn Museum; El Museo del Barrio, New York; the Newark Museum; the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and the Museo de Arte y Diseño de Miramar, San Juan.
Luciano is a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts in New York and Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT. He is currently an artist-in-residence within the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Civic Practice Partnership Residency Program in New York.
